Motivational Monday

I am headstrong, stubborn and smart.

Sometimes I don't know when to stop and my stubborn ways get the best of me. Other times I don't give up because I am so stubborn...I just can't. It is probably the reason why my mom always had a hard time with me. She said I was often relentless.  Still am.

You can say being headstrong and stubborn is one in the same. It could be but I view it as my trait to be willing to try... over and over again. I fall. I get up. I have my mind set on something and I will keep going with my eye on the prize.

My intelligence will sometimes get the best of me. Especially when I over think, over analyze and just stop. But it has also saved me by blocking certain memories and surviving different stages of my life. It allows me to follow my own pace and I'm in what I call my perfect place. I  always land on my feet because of some final smart move I made. I am grateful.

So why do I make these statements on a motivational Monday entry? --- well to invite you to do the same. Reflect on who you are and how far you have come. Not to stay stuck in the past but to see how far  you have come. No matter where you are in your life thank yourself for  getting you there. Give yourself some self-love and then create something new just for you.

Here's to being the best you. Namaste.

Wonderful Wednesday

Eden shares her story below.

When I think about my childhood, I can remember loving to laugh, having lots of friends, getting good grades, wearing dresses with sneakers and playing as hard as the boys did at recess or P.E. I also remember being a lot bigger than the other kids, not being able to fit into clothes at the stores they shopped at, being teased about being overweight, never wanting to share my real weight or to get on a scale around my peers. As if being one out of a handful of black/brown students in an entire school and living in a neighborhood less “wealthy” (and much less white) than the one I was schooled in wasn’t enough to create feelings of alienation, being overweight fueled the fire. Though it’s taken several years to truly recognize and bring light to it, seeds of pain and insecurity were taking deep root in my body and in my psyche.

I joined weight watchers with my mom and my neighbor when I was twelve and had a little success. When I started the ninth grade, my mother picked me up from school one day after having gone on a school camping trip and she very simply said to me, “Eden, today you are going to start a new diet, we all are, the whole family is going to do this together.” And she went on to describe the details of the diet and that she had already cleared the kitchen so we could start fresh. I welcomed the idea with no resistance and was quite relieved. At that point, I was about 5 lbs away from 200 and was fed up. In about 1 year and some change, I lost 45 lbs. I had made fat so much of an enemy that I was too afraid to deviate from my diet’s restrictions. This sparked a shift towards health consciousness and was the beginning of a journey into exploring nutrition and health a bit more. I had always been very aware of my body but I began building a different relationship to it--one that was less centered around shame and more filled with learning and understanding.

I played some sports in high school, and during college, I kept a somewhat inconsistent workout schedule and maintained a pretty clean diet. I took the initiative to research various nutrition and alternative healing philosophies in order to better individualize my diet. About 2 and a half years ago, I began taking workout classes and very quickly fell in love (some may call it an addiction) with my workouts. I made fitness a very central focus, going to classes every day (sometimes multiple classes a day) and if I ever had to miss a class it was a very big deal. Since the first day I started at this studio, I have not fallen off and I am the strongest I’ve ever been. But what I have learned is that working out isn’t the hardest part. Truly, the heavy lifting comes in trying every day to combat the fat little girl inside of me—the addiction, the emotional comfort of food, the insecurity, the self loathing, the negative voices.

I feel that my interests and the work I set out to do in life is driven by my desire to help myself and to help others who are made to feel like they are less than, like they have less than, or like they don’t belong. My passion for social justice/social change as well as for health/wellness come from a very personal place. My passion and commitment to wellness and education have allowed me the opportunity to pursue (alongside my coach, Anthony Freeman) developing a wellness lifestyle brand and community of individuals who are empowering themselves to be more optimal being. Norma is an example to all of us. We are all excited by her leadership and dedication to creating spaces for herself and her community to achieve their health goals.

Wonderful Wednesday

Cristina Shares her Story

Below are Cristina's insights, turning points and encouraging words. Thank you Cristina for being raw and real.

Wow!!! How time flies. People come and go out of our lives for good or bad but not my Norma. It's crazy how people cross our paths but it all happens for a reason. In 2008 I decided to go back to school to pursue one of my many goals. Much to my surprise I gained a lifelong friend along the way. I first met Norma in class a few minutes before our lunch break. Not knowing the neighborhood much I couldn't decide what to eat but damn was I hungry and picky!!! Norma mentioned she worked around the area and knew a lot of great places we could grab a quick bite to eat. Well before I know it I'm in her truck driving somewhere to eat, (yes, we connected over food and I got in a strangers car). lol!! From that day on we had lunch every other Saturday and she made it a point to introduce me to new places and take me out of my comfort zone.

Well ...moving forward. --> The pressure of being a full time student, working a full time job and being a mother and wife began to take a toll on my body. My weight went up and down. I was like a damn yo-yo. I couldn't manage to stay at a certain weight for more than 6 months but I did manage to stay within a size 9 to 13. Except for that one time I managed to drop to like a size 3 but not for long. Lol. I was tired of walking around with "fajas" on to keep the extra stuff nice and tight. I could no longer bear having a muffin top or a serious camel. I was tired of getting tired while walking up a flight of stairs or on drives; the seat belt being so tight and uncomfortable around my stomach pouch. Not to mention I had my mind wrapped on this one fab dress I wanted to wear.

As I had brunch with some of my good friends I sat there listening to their weight struggles and their success stories. I started having all these crazy thoughts in my mind about my body and how unhappy I really was when ever I gained weight.  That's when it hit me it was time to make a change. My friend Ruby mentioned this program called Weight Watchers. I was so intrigued so as soon as I had a chance I researched the program and I figured it won't hurt to try. On top of that Norma introduced me to new ways I could stay active while having fun (pole sisters...lol). Sure enough ONE year and NINE months later I am down to a size 3 and 45 lbs lighter. In three more months I will have a new benchmark : I maintained my weight loss for ONE full year. How exciting...yey!! I've always loved myself. Now I'm just infatuated with all of me!!

On a Serious Note: Throughout this journey I have learned to accept that I will fall. I will gain/lose a few lbs. I will stumble. I will rise. I'm not perfect. I'm human. I will get back up and continue to push harder and love myself for who I've become physically, mentally, & emotionally because it's a lifestyle not a phase!!! HARD WORK, BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS PAYS OFF. I could not have done this without the support of my family and friends!!

My motto..."Anyone can start a journey but staying is the challenge. Remember all the hard work as for today marks the day your journey transforms into a lifetime challenge."

Wonderful Wednesday

Self-Motivation

The workout schedules I create keep me on track. I have not created a schedule for a few months because I was working with "Los Game Changers" and our team schedule. I was also sick in January and most of February. My motivational Monday share from 03/02 was an eye opener. The endomondo e-mail made me want to plan and do more.

Activity Boundaries

I created my workout schedule and have set some supportive boundaries for myself. For example, I have a few "EXTRAS" on the schedule like Kickboxing/Under the Belt on Tues. & Thur., ROAR as a double on Mon. & Wed. Which means if I feel good and energized I will take the EXTRA class. If not I will go home and rest after ONE class. This will still put me at 2 hours of exercise a day since I am sticking to yoga and PiYo mornings. Activity in the morning keeps me focused and balanced. I notice the difference in my performance right away. I am also walking, hiking or jogging for a minimum of 30 minutes 4 days a week.

Playing Big

The goal is to keep a steady pace and shoot for at least 2 hours of activity a day. Friday's are my OPTIONAL active recovery days and will be the exception with an an hour of activity. If I am sick I will not make myself wrong. I will listen to my body and provide it with self-love. If that requires rest so be it. However, I will not use illness as a cop-out so if I feel I can remain active...I will keep pushing. I am playing big!

Here's to lighting the fire and keeping it moving!

Wonderful Wednesday

We all have a story. We all have struggles. Here is more on Lola and how she remains diligent to achieve and sustain her goal.

Lola's Story

Every day, every month, every year for over four years I have learned something new about myself. I’ve become my own motivator and super hero, I never knew how strong I was until now.
Being a single mom since 2001 has taught me strength, unconditional love, compassion, and to be a provider, protector, and a Guidance counselor for my children. I did not have a significant other to talk to when I felt down; However, I did have a wonderful sister to help me with my children. I also found something wonderful to replace a man, food! When I couldn’t find an answer to something or something would trouble me I always had food!

I lost my way, I lost Lola and I didn’t know where she was. Everyone has their own journey and reasoning for wanting to be fit. My reason wasn’t so much because I hated being fat,
I was always one of the most confident chunky girls you would have met in your life! I wore shorts with cottage cheese on my legs, and lord knows I thought I looked fine and sexy. Unfortunately, life and health issue’s came and it made me re-evaluate my whole lifestyle. I cut all the bad food cold turkey and started to cook for the first time in 30 years.

I was never athletic and never watched what I ate. As a matter of fact my favorite food was and continues to be a good hamburger with a side of unlimited fries! The very first mile I ever walked took me an hour and a half to complete, the very next day I woke up sore beyond all reason. The soreness did not stop me, it made me want to keep going, and as time passed I challenged myself to jog. To my surprise, one day I jogged a mile like it was nothing. Over the years I've tried different exercise methods: kettle balls, weight training, yoga, cycling, swimming, running, kickboxing and the list goes on. I might bore people with all of my fitness posts, but for me it’s a lifestyle I have adapted to. I don’t count on medications for depression or to cure what I have, instead I took control of my life and eat what I'm supposed to, to avoid the multi-million dollar pharmaceutical drugs that poison peoples bodies instead of making them better. God is truly the one that has given me strength and the one I talk out my issues with. God and exercise is my therapy.

This is a part of my story that continues to unfold day by day, and as long as God allows me to be here …. I'LL ENJOY LIFE

Remain Coachable

The Journey and My Coach

For info. about future workshops and fitness classes
please e-mail: joinaftoday@gmail.com

I can be a renegade. I can be vocal about what I do not like but just as easy I can be understanding and above all coachable.

It is not often you find a trainer/coach who is dedicated, passionate and understanding. Anthony has been a key element in my transformation. He is passionate about fitness and understands how important it is to modify exercises for my fitness level. He also knows when it's time to push harder and make me do more. A prime example of this was when he pushed me to complete the spin workshop. I was trying to just participate in only the HIIT workshop because I did not enjoy the spin class I tried in the past. I tried to talk my way out of it by stating how hard, uncomfortable and painful it was the first time.

He listened then simply stated, "it's not optional". Yes, I wanted to throw myself to the floor kick and scream and throw a CLASS A tantrum but (1) I'm grown and (2) he wasn't listening. **HAHA ** So I said, "fine, I will remain coachable and do it". This is because I trust his skills and know in the end he's on MY TEAM. He has not guided me wrong with ROAR and he is dedicated to his clients/students obtaining optimal results. He provides weekly workshops to make sure we remain informed and tries everything to keep us focused. I have lost 101 pounds to date - 60 of them while training/coaching with Anthony. So I listen and trust his guidance.

Spinning Workshop with Anthony Freeman - Nov. 2, 2014

The result of the spinning workshop:

It was not as bad the second time. It was not as painful. It was still uncomfortable but I chose to focus more on the elements I liked about the workshop and his coaching methods. Once it was over I committed to doing it twice a week. Today is day two of week one in spinning. I'm ready for another awesome fitness adventure!

Here's to remaining open to change.

New Era

Pepe's Journey

I told Jose the only gift I wanted for my birthday was for him to work out with me on my birthday.  While I hoped he would enjoy it...I did not go into the situation expecting him to join. After two sessions he decided to join accelerate sycle studio with me. I'm elated.

He was the missing piece of my journey.  I am proud of his current choices and will do my best to encourage his journey.

Here's to keeping it going.
